Keeping students safe at university this year

The start of a new university year is upon us. Whether they’re returning for the next stage of their university journey or just taking their first steps, it’s always important that students know how to look after their possessions and themselves.

Having so many high-value items in their halls of residence or house makes students one of the groups most at risk of crime. And if they are targeted, the after-effects can be incredibly difficult to cope with.

Here are some ways that students can look after their belongings while at university.

Keep valuables out of sight

Living in an era where technology rules means that students are more likely to own high-value items such as laptops (more than one in some cases), mobile phones, and games consoles; all of which are prized targets for would-be thieves.

Putting these in a wardrobe or hidden under the bed when they’re out at lectures and making sure other items aren’t on show makes a student house or room less of a target and protects other students in the same property.

Double-check that all the doors and windows are locked on the way out and if the worst should happen, write the postcode on valuable items with a UV marker so that they can be tracked by police. If you’re planning to return home for a while, like over the holidays for example, take as many of these back with you as possible so you can keep an eye on them.

Protect yourself from other break-ins

It’s not just burglars and vandals that students are at risk from. There are also cyber criminals to be mindful of. Ensuring that laptops and important files are password protected is a vital defence.

It’s also an idea to regularly back everything up should your machine experience a hard-drive crash or, again, if it is stolen or damaged. You can’t be too careful!

The same also applies to mobile phones – make sure it has a strong PIN number that nobody will be able to guess easily and all numbers are backed up using another device like a USB stick for example.

Keep the cash secret

Openly flaunting large amounts of cash or leaving notes on display will put students at even greater risk. Make sure you only carry what you need and if you’re at a cashpoint, be aware of who is around you.

Even when you’re in your accommodation, it’s still worth keeping money well out of sight. You might even want to buy a small safe or a lockable box to protect your money when you’re away and again, keep it well concealed.

Looking after students’ peace of mind with security services

For universities across the country, the welfare of their students should always be a top priority. Our trained security guards are on hand to ensure that accommodation blocks are permanently protected and carry spare keys in case anyone accidently locks themselves out.

Our services also include mobile patrols to check lecture halls and buildings after the seminars have finished, as well as locking & unlocking to make sure everyone in the building is allowed to be there.

Of course, every university is different and will have unique needs which is why we make sure we learn as much as possible about the students on your campus. We’ve provided security services for both Nottingham Trent University and University of Nottingham, ensuring a safe place for students to learn and enjoy the next chapter in their lives.
